OFCI Report: Editorial
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Just last week I was in an establishment, and as I was standing at the entrance a young man entered. Upon entering through the door, he look at me with this air of arrogance as if to say he was better than me and he was doing me a favor by passing me by. It seems to me that this younger generation is more disrespectful and rude than people in my day and before. They talk to you any kind of way with any kind of foul language....and they treat their mom's and dad's like they are the parent and mom and pop are the child. But the sad part is that in the latter scenario the parents seem to allow that to happen because "They don't want to hurt their child's feelings or make them upset. So now instead of having a generation of kids who you want to mentor and teach and feel safe that you are leaving the future in comfortable hands, you have a generation that you want to just take to etiquette class or military school. Back in my day old folks would discipline you for showing them disrespect. I remember one day as I was walking home from school I passed this older lady as she standed near her gate and I didn't speak to her...She stopped me dead in my tracks and told me that I was rude for not greeting her and she knows my parents raised me better. Also one day as I was attempting to cross the street a older lady was turning the corner but instead she allowed me to cross before she did. As I was crossing she rolled down her window and said.."Young man don't you know how to say Thank You when somebody does something nice for you?" From those days on I always minded my manners when dealing with strangers. But this generation here...they can care less about you, and your presence around them. They Seem to think that in every single that the world revolves around them and they are the most important things to come along since soap. But who do we blame for this phenomeno happening. Do we blame the parent for raising rude children and allowing them to be so condescending, or do we blame ourselves for dropping the ball and allowing these kids to be so rude and not saying anything. I have often heard people say that they are afraid to tell the kids anything when they are rude because they are violent. An in other cases if you do correct someone else's children and you and they know they are in the wrong, the parents want to jump on you instead of the child who actually committed the offense. Instead they reward them because they got fussed at and now their felling are hurt and bruised. Regardless to whose to blame the problem still needs to be addressed and solved...Now whether the Parents and we as a community are going to do it we need to step up our game and do it to save our kids and ours and their future.... Cause if we don't the polce will and I'm sure these kids are not going to like how they get them in line.
