OFCI Report: Political Commentary. 2012 "My President is Whack" Will this be the new Battle Cry?
I am going to play Devil's Advocate here writing this article, and as I write it I am going to take my time because there are a lot of points that I want to bring up. 2008 was a political year that brought about a lot of emotion. Everyone was excited because we were at the point of getting rid of the Bush era of politics and bringing in an era as the Democratic front runner phrased it of "Hope and Change" that you can believe in. An as time went on and the two top runners from each political parties were chosen, the battle really begun. Soon after on that faithful day in November a winner was chosen, and Barack Obama became 44th President of the United States. Now this was not just a monumental victory because of the fact that a Democrat has regained control of the White House again, but it was monumental because for the first time America had chosen its first Afro-American President. And Black America couldn't have been prouder. Because now it seemed that with President Obama in the White House, the race had really "Overcome" and that all our "troubles were gonna be over". Now the stage was set, and the new President has started his administration and things are off with a bang. Bills were being passed, the Prez was on television signing them into law with his invited guest. The Obama administration was on its way. But as we look back at all that President Obama has done and we fast forward now to 3 years into his administration, one has to ask the question: Was this victory of the nation's first Black President really a win for Black America as well? I remember the night it was announced that President Obama had one the Presidency. As the cameras panned the crowd, you could see tears flowing. Also, as the reporters got audience reactions, you heard statement such as, "This is a good day for America and he is going to fix taxes, education, mortgage prices, gas prices, etc." It seems that the People had so many High Hopes for this man and he hadn't even stepped foot in the White House yet to begin his official term. But you can't blame them for the way they felt. During his campaign you had a guy that spoke with such finesse, eloquence, and coolness. One couldn't help but think, "This man is gonna do it right." He has the juice. I mean people's hopes were up so high that you almost expected this man to Walk on Water after he entered Office. After all, people had been giving him nick names such as the Anointed One, God Sent, The One etc. and magazines had been picturing him with halos, so one could only Speak of him as a type of Savior. So like I was saying, as the President entered into office things began to move and shake, but still there was this high expectation of the man to move mountains etched out by the previous administration. An unbeknown to President Obama these would be some difficult mountains to try and move. Now to be fair, the Bush administration left the new President some pretty hefty situations to deal with. Decisions that were made during the old had to be ironed out during the new. And to this Presidents defense, he really had no idea how it would effect this county and the impact it would cause. But later on he would soon find out. As the political winds began to blow President Obama began to feel it as the tides began to shift and in many situations, not in his favor. It seemed that on every issue when he would try to move one step forward, his opponents would knock him two step backs. On some things he did prevail in winning with them, but for him it was a hard fought battle. But as he fought for all of these issues, where was the care and concern for the Black Community amidst all of this? Or, was there any care for the Black Community at all? Many Blacks were looking for Mr. Obama to bring jobs to their communities. Many were looking for better education and housing. Others thought that since he was "The Black President" that you would see more high ranking blacks not only in his administration but in fields across the country. But to their surprise it didn't happen like they hoped. Many blacks today are disappointed with President Obama because for the race he has not done enough in their opinion. "How can a Black man, being President, sit in the White House seeing the plight of his people not do anything about it?" "Maybe he is not down as we thought after all." "He is just a tool of the man just like the rest of them." "He sold us out." These are some statement I have heard many of our people say toward the President. Now to his defense again. I have heard this on a video clip one day and I agree with it whole heartily and hope that the blacks that read this understand this as well. Even though Mr. Obama is Black and the President, he was not voted just President of Black People. He was voted President of all People in America. Sure the black race seems to be getting the bottom of the barrel when it comes to education and economics, but that is not just happening in just our communities anymore, but in all. So to think that the President should concentrate on just one race's plight would make him seem bias when he is to support the liberties of all people that he governs. Sure he should raise the issue that blacks are being and have been treated unfairly in many cases, but also make the argument that so have other races, and declare that he is here to ease all our ailments, not just some as President of the United States. Sure you can get mad at him because you think he is not doing what you like for him to do and wish he'd do more....that is your right as a voter and a citizen in this country. But to expect him to be bias, isn't that asking to much? In 2008 everyone was on the band wagon shouting and posting, and displaying: "My President is Black" in 2012 now that all of these situations have happened will they be saying: "My President is Whack"....?
